POND QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED THE MOST
HOW TO CALCULATE THE SIZE OF YOUR POND:
The surface area of the body of water is an important piece of information that a pond owner should have in considering pond management decisions. Appropriate fish stocking rates, pond care treatments, and aeration options can be impacted by a more accurate measurement of the pond surface area. Here's an easy way to calculate the approximate surface acreage of a pond using Google Maps.
1. Enter a nearby address of the pond. Click on Satellite view in bottom left corner.
Navigate by scrolling to locate the pond.
2. Right click on the screen near the pond. From the drop-down menu, click on Measure
Distance. Click around the perimeter of the pond, using multiple clicks. End at the
original starting point. The lines between the dots can be adjusted by dragging them
to make them more precise.
3. Once the perimeter is closed, the Total Area will be displayed in square feet. Divide
this by 43, 560 (sq. ft of an acre) to get the approximate surface acreage of the pond.
The example on the right has an area of 37,535 . Divide by 43,560 = 0.861697428833
The pond is a little over 3/4 acre in size.
